marco's 212X thread is the reason i am posting this. figured another data point helps, and mine was a much shorter trip.

2020 Scarab 255 ID, twin Rotax 250s, 138 hours, on the factory tandem trailer. we live on the Blackwater side of Smith Mountain Lake, outside Moneta, and our 2006 Bayliner 185 was done. i wanted a jet so the kids could tube in the coves, and because i was tired of buying props after every trip up the Roanoke side where the stumps are.

found it in April on the m&a listing. it was at a lender yard outside Greensboro, a little under 120 miles from my driveway, so delivery was free since the first 1,000 miles cost nothing. showed up 13 days after i wired.

i bid 55,250. no idea where that landed against anybody else. for comparison a dealer in Roanoke had a 2021 255 ID at 67,900 with 60 hours. there is no buyer's fee on top, so the bid was the price.

nice boat. the 1630 ACE in those is the same engine family i work on all day in the Sea-Doos. oil and filter every 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first, XPS 5W-40 synthetic. at 138 hours you are probably due if nobody did it at 100.

ask the m&a people whether the lender's file had any service paper. and since you will have the hatch open anyway, put a light on the wear rings, the pumps on those have replaceable rings too.

jen, no service paper, just what was on the listing. changed the oil on both last weekend. it was dark but full, and the filters in there were Rotax filters, so somebody serviced it at some point. rings look even.

typing this on my phone at anchor off Bridgewater Plaza waiting for the fireworks with what feels like 300 other boats. the one thing i should have caught: the bimini had a torn seam along the back edge. you could not see it in the photos because the top was folded down in every shot. a canvas lady in Huddleston stitched it for 85 dollars. only surprise so far.

ok, this one i like better than the 212X, no offense to marco. 120 miles, free delivery, and you could have driven to Greensboro to look at it if you wanted. did you?

also how did titling go in Virginia, i hear DWR is slow in the summer.

glenn's question plus one more. ray, how did you land on 55,250? did you take the dealer price and knock 10k off? i am trying to figure out how people pick a number at all when you cannot see what anybody else bid.

glenn, no, i did not drive down. i asked M&A Auto Sales for more pictures of the hull bottom and both intakes instead, and they sent about 20 the next business day. i asked on a saturday though and heard nothing until monday afternoon, so if you are up against a close, ask early in the week.

title: North Carolina title with the lien release on it, plus a bill of sale from the lender. Virginia DWR registered it by mail and it took about three weeks. what people should know is the Virginia watercraft sales and use tax, 2 percent of the price, which was a little over 1,100 for me. paid it to DWR with the registration. the trailer went through DMV in Rocky Mount, one visit.

colby: i pulled four dealer listings for 255s in Virginia and the Carolinas, took the cheapest one with similar hours, took off what i figured the first service and any canvas or upholstery surprises would cost, and then took off another couple thousand for not being able to sit in it. that came out to 55 and change. i was ready to lose at that number and be fine with it.

two buying threads in a row and nobody got scammed or towed home on a flat. now i am thinking about a 255 for the bay, twins would be nice for the ten mile run back from Egmont Key when it gets choppy in the afternoon. ray, how does it handle a chop? and does M and A get boats in Florida much, or was the 212X just luck?
