lurked since this place opened on friday. figured i owe it a real post, since most of what i know about jet pumps came from reading other people's mistakes.

me: marco, Lake Havasu City, HVAC, which means June through September i work 60 hour weeks and go out on sundays. we rented from the place by the channel for six summers. last fall my wife added up six summers of rental money and it was most of a boat. so in January i started looking.

out here a 2021 212X goes for silly money. the dealer on the main drag had a 2022 at 49,995 and a 2020 with 210 hours for 44 and change. so i looked farther, which is how i ended up on mandaautollc.com. bank repos, sealed bid, they truck it to you. the boats stay at whatever yard the lender uses until somebody wins them.

first try went nowhere. in March i put 47,000 on a 2020 Yamaha 242X E-Series through m&a and lost. you never see anybody else's bid, so whether i was short a hundred bucks or five grand is a mystery forever. that ate at me for about a week.

second try was April, this 212X. a lender yard outside Fort Myers. the listing had a photo of the Connext screen showing 94.6 hours on both engines, about 50 photos, a cold start video, and it came on the matching Yamaha tandem trailer. i bid 41,750. the email that i won came the next morning around ten, not right at the close like i figured, so i spent one night refreshing my inbox like an idiot. no buyer's premium, so 41,750 is what the boat cost.

delivery: google says 2,240 miles, their sheet said 2,251. first 1,000 are free and the other 1,251 at 70 cents came to 875.70. wired it on a tuesday and the boat was in my driveway 15 days later.

first summer owning a jet. what should i look at before July 4th weekend turns Copper Canyon into bumper boats? my photos and a few from the listing are attached.

welcome. the Florida guy has to say it: a boat that sat at a yard near Fort Myers probably lived in salt or brackish water. the Caloosahatchee is brackish a long way up from the gulf. not a dealbreaker on a Yamaha, they hold up fine if somebody flushed them. but check the hose clamps and the exhaust area in the engine hatch for white crust, and look at the anodes on the pump. if they are chalky and half gone, it ran salt and nobody took care of that part.

also, Florida trailers sit in the rain and get their bearings dunked every launch. jack up each wheel and spin it before you tow it to the lake.

your third attachment, pump_starboard. zoom in on the impeller through the grate, the blade sitting at about 2 o'clock. that leading edge is bright and curled over. it is not glare, glare does not have a shape like that. somebody ran it through shell or gravel. the port pump looks clean from what i can see in the listing shot.

it is not a disaster. a rolled edge makes that side cavitate on the hole shot and you lose a little speed on that pump. but pull the grate and look before you start blaming anything else for a slow start. a handful of bolts on a 212, lie on your back with a headlamp.

you have better eyes than me, the guy who hauled it, and whoever took the listing photos. pulled the starboard grate last night at 9 because it was still 104 at six. two blades curled, one worse than the other. and about twenty feet of green fishing line wound around the shaft right behind the impeller. port had a little line on it too, blades fine.

sandbar, you nailed it. anodes about half gone, white crust on two hose clamps on the port engine. it lived in salt. trailer wheels spun ok, the left rear bearing feels a little gritty.

so file the edges myself or take it in? the shop i would use is booked two weeks out in June.

we see the Fort Myers and Naples boats at the shop all the time. honestly the fishing line worries me more than the blades. it works in behind the impeller and chews on the shaft seal, then you get water past the seal into the bearing housing. after you clear it, look in the bilge under the pump for water, and for grease that looks milky.

blades you can dress yourself with a fine flat file. take the burr off and follow the original curve, do not try to hammer the edge back straight. then a feeler gauge between blade tip and wear ring at a few spots, compare to the manual. in spec, run it. way over, new ring.

also ask the m&a people if any service paper came with the lender's file. sometimes there is a dealer invoice in there. we sold a pile of 212s in 2021 and half of them got the first service with us.

new here and new to boats, period. Sacramento, we rent on Folsom a couple of times a summer. reading this with my wife looking over my shoulder.

my question is about the trip, not the bid. 2,251 miles, through Texas in June, on a trailer that had been sitting in a yard. who checked that trailer before it left? did the driver find the gritty bearing, or did you? that part scares me more than the bidding does.

colby, i asked that on the phone before i ever bid. M and A set up a contract hauler, a guy with a 3/4 ton Ram, i never paid him anything directly. he told me he greased the hubs and checked the tires before he left the yard and i believe him, the grease was fresh when i looked. the gritty bearing was mine to find, and it held for 2,251 miles. first week i did replace both trailer tires anyway, the date codes said 2018. $310 at the tire shop on Kiowa.

pump update. dressed the starboard blades thursday night, pete walked me through it by pm. about an hour a blade, being careful. the gap to the wear ring is in spec on both pumps. cut the line off both shafts, no water in the bearing housing, seal looks dry. ran it this morning at 6 out of Windsor Beach before the crowds. it used to bog and shudder for a second on the hole shot and now it just goes. 49.8 on the GPS with two of us, a cooler and half a tank.

jen, no service paper. i asked the m&a auction office and they said the lender's file had what was in the listing and nothing more. so there is no history on this boat at all. with a repo you get the hour meter and the photos and that is it.

somebody has to be the grump. 41,750, plus 876 in shipping, plus 310 in tires, plus an evening on your back with a file, for a jet boat that ran salt and has zero service history. there is a 2021 212X at a dealer on Lake Norman right now for 44,900 with 120 hours, fresh water, 100 hour service done, and a dealer you can go yell at.

after you add your extras up that is about two grand apart. i ran a MasterCraft X-Star for eleven years and sold it because the payment on a new one was insane, so i get it, prices are stupid. i just would want more than two grand of gap to take a boat sight unseen from a yard in Florida. nothing against M&A Auto Sales, it is the blind part i would not do.

fair math for North Carolina, glenn. it does not work in Havasu. nobody here sells a 212X under 47 with any hours on it. and your Lake Norman boat would have to get to Arizona too, at retail freight, so that 44,900 is closer to 48 by the time it sits in my driveway.

where you are right is the history. i would pay a grand for a folder of service receipts and i did not get one. what got me over the sight unseen part was the 30 day money back if the boat was materially different from the listing. the hours on the m&a listing matched the screen, so i never needed it. the 6 month warranty i have not touched either.

mod hat on. three people have emailed me asking how Arizona registration went on a Florida boat. marco, when you get a minute put it in here so i can stop forwarding emails. and the jet versus inboard argument is a good one, glenn, but start a thread for it if you want to keep going.

mod hat off. Travis came up something like 30 feet after the floods this month. ramps at Mansfield Dam that sat closed for two years are open. hard to feel good about it after how it happened.

paperwork, long one, sorry.

two Florida titles came in one FedEx envelope, one for the boat and one for the trailer. each had the lender's lien release on it and was signed over to me. also the bank's bill of sale and a page that names m&a as the broker. that envelope was the slow part. the boat sat in my driveway a week before the paper showed up, and the email with the tracking number came nine days after i wired. i called twice. nice people both times, just slow on that one thing.

the boat goes through Arizona Game and Fish. i used the office in Kingman because i was up there for a job anyway. brought both titles, the bill of sale, my license, and the HIN off the transom written down. they registered it and charged the watercraft license tax, which is based on value, plus the registration fee. a bit over 400 all in for me, yours will be different.

the trailer goes through MVD. an out of state title means a Level I inspection, which turned out to be a lady walking out to the trailer and reading the VIN plate. first trip i did not have the bill of sale with me, it was in the boat folder at home. second trip took 20 minutes. plate and registration around 40 bucks.

so two trips to MVD, one to Kingman, and a week of nagging about an envelope. not terrible, not nothing.

late to this. marco, in the shallow river thread you said Topock Gorge. after the impeller thing are you still taking it up the river, or keeping it on the lake? i run the Clackamas and the Willamette below the falls and i chew up a set of blades about every other summer. curious how the 212 does in the gorge with the keel down.

update, Labor Day weekend, and an answer for clackamas.

took it up into Topock Gorge saturday with my brother in law and his two boys. about two miles into the gorge the overheat alarm came up on the Connext for the port engine. shut it down and drifted into an eddy on the Arizona side. a plastic grocery bag was sucked flat over the port intake grate. i had to get in and pull it off by hand. water was 84 so that was no hardship, but the current in there is real, i tied a line to myself first.

restarted, temp came back down in a minute or two, the alarm cleared and we ran home on both engines. flushed it sunday, all normal. so it was not the boat and not the impeller. it was a grocery bag in the gorge on a holiday weekend.

clackamas: in the gorge i stay in the channel and keep it on plane through the thin spots, i never come off plane over sand in there. no new marks on the blades, i checked sunday night with the headlamp, which is apparently how i spend sunday nights now. 131 hours on both. the warranty runs out in October.

for the two guys who emailed asking where it came from, it was M&A Auto Sales. i have no idea what they have up right now.
